Singing to your baby in the womb: keep it personal.

What a prenatal lullaby can mean for a parent, without turning a few notes into a performance goal.

Expectant parents resting their hands on a pregnant belly.

Choose words you can say naturally.

You could sing a short refrain, hum a melody or speak a goodnight sentence. There is no need to use a special singing style or speak in a language that feels unfamiliar. Begin with something you enjoy, and let the moment be small enough that it does not require rehearsal.

Do not watch for a test result.

You do not need a movement from the baby to confirm that your song was worthwhile. Movement concerns should be discussed promptly with your maternity team according to their advice, rather than checked by playing music. A song is a personal ritual, not a way to assess your baby’s health.

Invite someone without making it compulsory.

A partner may want to join in, choose a tune or simply listen beside you. Give each person room to feel comfortable. Some families enjoy singing during pregnancy; others do not. Waiting until you are holding the baby is also a perfectly reasonable way to begin your family’s musical tradition.

Remember a line for later.

If you want, write down the refrain so you can find it after birth. You may change it, forget it or choose a different tune then. Familiarity can be a lovely family connection, but it is not a promise of easier sleep, feeding or development. Your care team remains the source for individual pregnancy questions.
