Should you put headphones on your pregnant belly?

Choose ordinary listening instead of trying to deliver louder music directly to your unborn baby.

Expectant parents resting their hands on a pregnant belly.

You do not need a special listening device.

Pregnancy music products can make an ordinary song seem like something that must be delivered directly to the bump. There is no need to create that setup for a personal listening ritual. Choose music you enjoy in the room, or use your own voice, without pressing audio equipment against your abdomen.

More sound is not a better gift.

Avoid turning the volume up so the baby is sure to hear it. Sound exposure during pregnancy deserves care, and very loud environments can raise concerns. If your job or another regular activity involves substantial noise, discuss the actual circumstances with your maternity and occupational-health professionals rather than relying on a music app.

Separate enjoyment from assessment.

A song is not a method for checking the baby’s movements or wellbeing. If you notice a change that concerns you, follow your maternity team’s advice promptly. Do not wait for a favourite melody to produce a reassuring reaction before seeking help. Keep music in the category of optional enjoyment.

Choose a simpler ritual.

Sit somewhere comfortable, select one familiar piece and stop when you wish. You can write down a lyric or hum a few notes without buying additional equipment. That gives the moment a personal meaning while leaving health decisions with professionals who know your pregnancy. No listening streak or special prenatal playlist is required.
