BEDTIME RITUALS · 2 min read

A bedtime music ritual when an older sibling joins in.

Give everyone a small part without turning the baby’s bedtime into a living-room concert.

A mother reading a book while holding her baby.

Offer one clear role.

An older child might choose between two songs, say goodnight or help close the curtains with an adult. Keep the invitation small enough to explain in one sentence. Being involved does not mean they are responsible for making the baby sleep or for keeping the whole household silent afterward.

Separate the energetic part.

If your older child wants a dance or a louder singalong, you can enjoy that earlier in the day. The baby’s wind-down can use a quieter version of the same tune. Tell your older child what will happen next, rather than waiting until everyone is excited before asking for calm.

Keep attention available to both.

You might give the older child their own short story after the baby’s care is complete, depending on your arrangements. Avoid promising an exact time if feeding or settling is unpredictable. An honest sequence is often easier to explain than a countdown that you may not be able to keep.

Protect a simple ending.

End the shared song, stop the recording and move on. Keep devices and cables out of children’s reach, and supervise participation. If an evening goes differently, try again another day. A family ritual should offer a place for connection without assigning either child the job of managing the other’s emotions.
