A baby bedtime routine: less rush, more goodnight.

Simple, familiar moments to help you and your baby wind down together.

Start with connection, not a perfect schedule.

A bedtime routine can be a few familiar moments: a feed, a change, a cuddle and a quiet song. Choose something that fits your family. Your baby’s needs will change, and the routine can change with them.

Let the evening feel a little different.

Lower the lights and keep your voice calm. A short, predictable sequence can make the transition from a busy day feel more familiar. There is no need to get every evening exactly right.

Make music an invitation.

You might sing the same little song or choose a gentle instrumental piece. Keep it quiet and notice your baby’s response. Music is optional; your presence matters more than the playlist.

Leave room for real life.

Some evenings will be unsettled, even with a familiar routine. This does not mean you have done something wrong. If sleep or crying is worrying you, speak with your baby’s healthcare professional. You might agree on a minimum version for rushed evenings: one familiar phrase and a short cuddle. Share that version with another caregiver so the routine remains manageable when someone else takes over. Optional extras can wait for a day with more time.

Choose a recognisable opening.

You could begin with a sentence everyone in the household knows, such as “time for our goodnight song.” Keep it warm and brief. That gives another caregiver an easy starting point without requiring the evening to follow an exact clock or a long set of instructions.
