BEDTIME RITUALS · 2 min read
Bath, book or song? Choose your bedtime ingredients.
You can build a recognisable evening without adding every soothing activity to a growing checklist.
Choose ingredients you can repeat.
A bedtime routine often grows by accident: one suggestion becomes five, and suddenly the evening has a programme. Write down the parts you actually enjoy. Keep the ones that fit your home and your baby’s care needs. A routine is easier to use when it belongs to your family rather than a checklist online.
Give each activity a reason.
A book might mean a few moments with a familiar voice. A song might be a gentle ending. Bathing may belong earlier in the day if evenings feel rushed. You do not have to include all three, or use them in a supposedly perfect order, to create time together.
Leave gaps between the ingredients.
You can finish one activity before beginning another. That may mean closing the book before switching on a recording, rather than reading over background music. Try the simpler arrangement and notice whether it feels more comfortable. You are choosing an atmosphere, not conducting a test of your baby’s development.
Change the recipe when needed.
If a particular step repeatedly makes the evening harder, reconsider it. Keep necessary care in place and remove an optional extra. Your healthcare professional can help with age-specific sleep or feeding questions. Familiarity can come from a few small details, including your own voice, rather than the length of the whole ritual.

A SONG FOR THE MOMENT YOU ARE IN
One small pause.
One familiar melody.
