Before the playlist: what might your baby need?

A small pause to check care needs before trying another sound, song or soothing trick.

A mother holding her sleeping newborn close to her shoulder.

Treat crying as information.

It is tempting to search for the one track that will change the moment. Begin by considering feeding, comfort and ordinary care instead. You may not know immediately what your baby needs, and that uncertainty is not a parenting failure. Music can wait while you attend to the baby in front of you.

Keep your next step simple.

Rather than changing the light, song, room and movement together, choose the next sensible care action. If you decide to use a recording later, make it one quiet sound in the background. You do not need to keep switching tracks every few seconds as though you are looking for a code.

Stop an experiment that feels unhelpful.

If more sound seems to add to the bustle, turn it off. You can try a quiet voice or simply remain present while you work out what is needed. A song is an optional part of care, not evidence that a baby ought to be calm by a particular point in the track.

Know when to seek support.

If the crying is unusual, persistent or accompanied by concerns about illness or feeding, contact a healthcare professional. Get urgent help for severe symptoms such as breathing difficulty or unresponsiveness. If you feel overwhelmed, place your baby safely down and ask a trusted adult for help. Never shake a baby.
