Humming to your baby when you cannot remember a lullaby.

No lyrics, no equipment and no performance: a small musical moment using the voice you already have.

A parent watching their newborn resting in their arms.

Start with two or three notes.

A hum does not need a complete song behind it. Choose a tiny phrase that feels easy to repeat and use a comfortable voice. If you lose the melody, begin again or stop. Your baby is not marking your pitch, and you do not have to sound like a recording to share a musical moment.

Fit it around care.

You might hum briefly during an awake cuddle or as you finish an ordinary task together. Do not wait for the tune to end before responding to feeding or comfort needs. If you are too tired to sing, speaking a few familiar words can be your version of the same quiet connection.

Let silence answer.

After a short phrase, pause. Notice whether you want to continue and whether the activity suits your baby. There is no required number of repetitions. A little music can be part of your time together without becoming continuous background sound or a task that has to be completed correctly.

Save a recording for another day.

A playlist may be convenient, but it does not need to replace your own voice or accompany every hum. Choose whichever feels manageable. If crying or sleep is worrying you, get advice about the wider situation. Humming is a family interaction, not a treatment for illness, feeding difficulties or persistent distress.
