UNDERSTANDING SLEEP · 2 min read

Sharing bedtime: the same song, two different parents.

A handover that keeps the important details clear while leaving room for each caregiver’s own voice.

A mother sitting up and cradling her sleeping baby.

Agree on what actually matters.

Write a short handover around care: what your baby has needed, where the necessary supplies are and what the next adult should know. Add the favourite song as a preference, not as the instruction that makes bedtime succeed. A second caregiver does not need to imitate the first person’s every movement.

Share a simple musical cue.

Choose a track both adults can find easily, or a tune that can be hummed without remembering all the words. Save the link in one agreed place. Test volume and playback before the handover. This avoids a last-minute hunt through messages when someone is already holding a sleepy baby.

Allow different versions of comfort.

One parent may sing; another may prefer a quiet recording. The routine can still have a recognisable shape: care, a familiar moment and a calm ending. Give the adult taking over space to learn their own relationship with the baby, rather than narrating every step from the doorway.

Review the workload, not the score.

After a few evenings, talk about what made the handover easier. Did someone need more time, clearer feeding information or a proper break? Avoid judging either parent by how quickly the baby slept. The goal is shared care and a sustainable evening, including support when sleep becomes difficult.
