BOTTLE FEEDING · 2 min read

Paced bottle feeding: the baby leads, not the song.

Why a gentle playlist should never become the rhythm or timer for a bottle feed.

A mother supporting her baby during a bottle feed.

Keep the word pace about the baby.

A slow song can make a room feel different to you, but it is not a feeding instruction. Responsive bottle feeding means paying attention to your baby rather than matching a set duration. Ask your healthcare professional to show you the approach suitable for your baby if you are unsure how to begin.

Prepare music outside the feed.

You might choose a recording beforehand and keep the device away from the feeding space. Use a low background level so you can remain attentive. If the music makes you watch the queue or wait for a favourite section, turn it off. The soundtrack should not compete with the care you are providing.

Leave room for stopping.

A baby may need a pause or may be finished before the bottle is empty. Do not encourage more milk because there is music left to play. Equally, do not rush to finish before the track ends. The recording can stop and start whenever you decide, without changing the baby’s feeding needs.

Use the right source for feeding questions.

For concerns about intake, comfort or technique, contact a qualified professional. No genre, tempo or instrument can tell you that a feed is going well. If you keep a musical ritual, let it mark a pleasant moment for your family rather than turn the feed into an activity with a target score.
